PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - Philadelphia police detectives worked a house in the city's Logan section where a 6-year-old girl shot herself in the toe after handling a gun cops say she found in a school bag.
Police say the girl found the gun while playing in the basement of a house on the 4800 block of North 8th Street. Investigators say the girl was with her 11-year-old brother when she handled the gun and it went off.
"Preliminarily, it appears that this weapon is registered to the father and it appears at this point everything is legal; however, detectives are on location and they'll do a thorough investigation," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
Police on scene say the girl's mother rushed her to Einstein Hospital for emergency treatment.
