Police Investigating Photo of Sleeping Cops

PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) Philadelphia Police are investigating a photograph that made the social media rounds over the weekend apparently showing a pair of officers asleep in their cruiser.

The origin of the photograph and the circumstances under which it was taken are unclear. It went viral with posters outraged over what they saw. We've obscured the officers' faces because we don't know the context of the photo.

Someone also posted the picture on the police department's social media page. Officials say they've identified the officers and internal affairs is investigating.

"At that point disciplinary action will be initiated on the officers in this situation," said Philadelphia Police Lt. John Stanford.

Many people FOX 29 spoke to say the officers should face consequences.

Law enforcement officials say this image isn't the message they want to send to citizens about the Philadelphia police. They also say it's dangerous for officers.

"I mean we're lucky that we're not burying two officers. I know that may sound a little dramatic but the reality of it is if someone was able to get close enough to take a photograph of these officers the same thing could have been done in terms of these officers being either hurt or killed," said Philadelphia Police Lt. John Stanford.

FOX 29 contacted the Fraternal Order of Police we're waiting to hear back from them.
