Police: Man commanded pit bull to attack officer before it was fatally shot
A man is in custody after police responding to a shots fired call were attacked by a pit bull in Southwest Philadelphia on Thursday.
Per reports, officers arrived on the 7100 block of Upland Street and attempted to stop a suspect for questioning. Police say the man, who appeared nervous and sweaty, tried to run when approached by the officers.
According to officials, a stuggle ensued between the suspect and the officer,, during which the man yelled out for his mother.
Just then, police say a large brown pit bull emerged from a house on the 2100 block of 71st Street and charged at the officers.
The dog was shot by one of the officers as the suspect continued to resisit arrest. Police say the man instructed the dog to continue attacking the officers by yelling "sick 'em!"
The dog attempted to bite an officer's face, but missed and bit the suspect on his cheek. The dog made a second attempt to bite the officers face, at which time the officer shot and killed the pit bull.
Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
The investigation is still ongoing.
