Police: Man with knife killed in officer involved shooting
KINGSESSING (WTXF) - Philadelphia Police are investigating a police involved shooting that left one man dead, after authorities say he charged officers with a knife.
The incident occurred early Friday morning on the 1200 block of South 51 st Street.
Police tell FOX 29 the incident stemmed from a domestic call, and officers had been called to the home about two hours prior to the shooting to serve a protection from abuse or restraining order on a man.
During their first encounter, police say the man obeyed officers and peacefully left the home.
About an hour and a half later, police received a 911 call reporting that the 51-year-old man had returned to the residence, which was a rooming house.
Investigators arrived and confronted the suspect, and that's when police say the man produced a 10-inch kitchen knife and lunged at the responding officers.
One of the officers deployed a taser, but investigators say it was not effective, causing the second officer to discharge his firearm.
The suspect was shot in the chest, and was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.
Police say the woman who filed the order was not injured in the shooting, but it is unclear at this time if she was hurt in an altercation with the suspect. The woman has been cooperative with police.
The officer who opened fire will be interviewed later in the day and placed on administrative duty according to protocol.
