Police: Murder Suspect Dead After Shooting Philadelphia Officer in Vest

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (WTXF)- Philadelphia Police have confirmed that a murder suspect was shot and killed by police Wednesday morning after opening fire on SWAT officers who were serving a warrant.

The incident occurred around 6:10 a.m. on the 800 block of Riverside Drive.

One officer was struck in the lower abdomen by gunfire but was wearing a bulletproof vest. Officers returned fire, injuring the suspect who sources have identified as Devon Guisherd, 27.

Both the officer and Guisherd were transported to Aria Torresdale Hospital where Guisherd later died around 6:42 a.m.

Police say the officer was released from the hospital a short time later, and that this was the second time this particular officer was saved by a bulletproof vest.

Sources tell FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce that SWAT officers were attempting to serve a murder warrant to Guisherd in the murder of Megan Doto, 25.

Doto, who was pregnant at the time of her death, was struck by a stray bullet in Frankford back on September 14th, 2014. Police say she was struck while sitting on her front porch of her Adams Avenue home. Doctors attempted an emergency C-section to deliver the baby but the child also died.

Homicide detectives previously said they believe the gunman was standing a block away from Doto when he fired 10 or 11 shots at a white, four-door car headed towards Adams Avenue.

Police believe the bullet traveled some 500 feet before it struck Doto, who leaves behind two surviving children, ages 4 and 6.
