Police Release Identity of Swimmer Whose Body Was Found in the Delaware River

Police have released the identity of a man who went missing while swimming across the Delaware River from the Burlington Mainland over to Burlington Island.

According to police, on Sunday, the City of Burlington Police Department, along with several other agencies responded to the area of the Riverfront near East Pearl and York Streets for a water rescue of a swimmer in the Delaware River. Emergency crews recovered the body of the missing swimmer around 8:45 p.m. Sunday.

Police identified the swimmer as Thomas Scott, 26, of Edgewater Park, New Jersey.

Authorities say the initial investigation showed that Scott and two friends were attempting to swim across the Delaware River from the Burlington Mainland over to Burlington Island. Police say about halfway to the island, witnesses described that Scott was having trouble staying afloat and went under the water. Local boaters attempted to rescue Scott before emergency crews arrived, but were unsuccessful.
