Police: Robbery Suspect Shot By Police Was Looking To Ambush Officer

A robbery suspect was shot, and wounded by police in Cobbs Creek Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred on the 100 block of South 61st Street around 6:00 a.m.

Police responded to 60 th and Spruce Streets for a call of a robbery in progress. Upon arrival a person walking to work told officers they had been robbed at gunpoint by a male suspect.

A short time later, police located a man fitting the description of the suspect on the 200 block of Edgewood Street.

Two officers approached the suspect, and one of the officers began chasing the suspect on foot, while the other officer followed from the cruiser as the three made their way up 61 st Street.

Police say the suspect then stopped and hid behind a home, and waited to ambush the officer who was chasing him on foot.

Before he was able to ambush the officer, the officer inside the patrol car caught up to the suspect and ordered him to drop his weapon multiple times.

Officers say the man failed to drop the gun, and the officer who was in the cruiser fired a single shot, striking the suspect in the stomach.

The suspect was transported to Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition.
