Police: Suspect in custody after standoff with police in Salem County
SALEM, N.J. (FOX 29) - New Jersey State Police and other law enforcement agencies have taken a suspect into custody after responded to reports of shots fired in Salem County.
Officers responded to the 100 block of East Broadway around noon on Wednesday.
Salem police say the U.S. Marshals Task Force tried to take Eric Smith into custody for a failure to appear warrant but he resisted.
"The suspect fired multiple wounds from a handgun at the task force members. At least one task force member returned fired. There were no law enforcement injury," Salem Police Chief John Pelura said.
Police say a negotiator established communication with Smith around 3 p.m. Wednesday and took him into custody without incident.
