Police: Woman loses control of car, plows into bus enclosure

Police say a woman lost control of her car and struck two people in a bus enclosure in Upper Darby Township.

The gray Toyota 4-door rested against a small tree in front of Darby's Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital Tuesday afternoon after the incident.

"She went over that bump right into the bus stop and ran them over. I saw bump, bump, bump. Then, she ran into the tree," eyewitness Donna DiBello said.

Police say it was about 1 p.m.Tuesday afternoon when the female motorist described as "an older woman" lost control on Lansdowne Ave. directly in front of the hospital.

She told police fearing she was going to hit another vehicle, she swung the Toyota onto the sidewalk, hammering the bus enclosure with a 62-year-old woman and 82-year-old man inside.

A source with knowledge of the incident says the 62-year-old woman pushed the older man out of the way and took the brunt of the strike. She has multiple injuries, but is in stable condition. The man suffered a leg injury.

Police were doing a blood test on the driver; however, the chief says it appears to be an accident.
