Robbery suspect dies after being shot by off-duty officer

Philadelphia Police are investigating a robbery that left a suspect dead after he was shot by an off-duty police officer.

The incident occurred at 2:20 p.m. in the city's Olney section at Broad and Chew Streets.

According to officials, an off-duty Philadelphia Police officer observed a robbery in progress on the 5700 block of Park Avenue.

The robbery suspect was armed with a handgun and was robbing an elderly citizen.

The officer announced himself as police and ordered the male suspect to drop his weapon. The suspect then pointed his weapon at the officer, and then the officer discharged his weapon.

The suspect ran with the officer giving chase on foot.

During the chase, the suspect pointed his gun at the officer again and fired; the officer then returned fire.

The suspect continued to flee with the officer following until he collapses at the corner of Broad and Chew Avenue. He was taken to Einstein Hospital where he was later pronounced at 3:06 p.m.

No officers were injured in the incident, and the weapon was recovered at the scene.

Homicide and Internal Affairs are investigating the incident and the officer will be placed on desk duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
