Santa Anita Park suspends horse racing indefinitely after death of 21st horse
ARCADIA, Calif. (FOX 11) - Santa Anita Park has suspended all races indefinitely after the death of another horse on Tuesday.
This is the 21st horse to die at the track in the last 10 weeks.
Officials at the track say the shut down will give them more time to inspect the racing surface.
"Let's Light the Way", a filly trained by Ron McAnally, was injured during a workout at about 7:45 a.m. Tuesday. McAnally told Daily Racing Form the filly suffered a "shattered sesamoid," a bone in the knee or foot, and believes the weather is to blame for these injuries.
The horse was euthanized a short time later.
Santa Anita Park was closed for two days a week ago so experts could study the main track to figure out why the horse deaths occurred.
Some animal advocacy groups called for a halt to racing at the track and for investigations into the trainers and veterinary records of the horses that have died.
