Teen Charged in Robbery and Home Invasion
Delaware County (WTXF) Police say a teen is charged in connection with a robbery and home invasion in Nether Providence.
According to police, an elderly female reported that she was in her upstairs bedroom and was awakened by a male, who she described to be in his early 20's, poking her with a gun, demanding money. When she told him that there was no money in the house, the male allegedly told her that they were going to drive to the MAC machine and withdraw money, police say.
The suspect allegedly forced the woman to drive her car to a MAC machine located on State Street in Media and demanded that she withdraw $2,000.00 or he would kill the victim and her husband, according to police.
Police say the MAC machine would only allow her to withdraw a total of $460.00 before an additional transaction was denied. The male forced the victim to drive back to her residence, where he woke the elderly husband and herded the couple into the kitchen, according to investigators.A
Around 4:30 a.m., police say, the suspect told the couple to go upstairs and go to bed, and he would remain on the couch downstairs until 9:00 a.m. The suspect told the victim that she was to meet him in the shopping center parking lot in the 500 block of Baltimore Pike on Monday January 4th at 9:00 a.m. with the remaining $1,500.00, police say.
According to investigators, the suspect told the couple if they reported the incident to the police that he would come back to the house. He told the woman that she would recognize him on Monday because he would be dressed in the same clothing.
Police say the suspect gained to the residence through a first floor kitchen window.
Police set up surveillance in the shopping center parking lot. Shortly after 9:00 a.m. the suspect dressed identical to the description provided by the victim entered the parking lot on foot and remained there for a short period of time, acting suspiciously, as if he were waiting for someone. Officers stopped the suspect and during a pat down of the suspect, officers discovered $363.00 in US Currency and a gold Timex watch, similar to the one that had been taken from the victim during the robbery and home Invasion, according to police. The man was then taken into police custody.
Police say the victim positively identified both the gold Timex watch found in the suspect's possession as an item that was taken from them during the course of the robbery/home invasion and the suspect's clothing as what the suspect was wearing the night of the alleged incident.
Investigators learned that the suspect formally lived in a rental home in the 400 block of Leiper Street, which is in close proximity to the victim's residence. Additionally, that residence where the suspect formerly lived is owned by the victim.
The suspect was identified as Jason Donte Hayes, 17, of Upper Darby, according to police.
Hayes has been charged as an adult with the crimes of Robbery, Kidnapping, Aggravated Assault, Burglary, Unlawful Restraint, Terroristic Threats, Possession of an Instrument of Crime, False Imprisonment, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, Simple Assault, Theft by Unlawful Taking, Receiving Stolen Property, Criminal Mischief and Loitering and Prowling at Night Time.
