Two local siblings raise money for Parkland shooting victim

Two local kids are raising money in honor of Scott Beigel as their Mitzvah project. Beigel was their camp division leader at Camp Starlight and a geography teacher at Stoneman Douglas who was killed in the Parkland shooting.

Jake Zaretsky has been thinking about the profound impact Scott Beigel had on his life during his summers at Camp Starlight in Northeast, Pa.

"He was a really funny guy. He was always making jokes and when he was serious it was serious but he was always popping jokes," he told FOX 29.

But when Scott Beigel got shot in the Parkland, Florida mass shooting everything changed.

"My mom was like, "Scott? Remember Scott?" And I was like, 'Yeah Scott Biegel from camp' And she was like 'He's in the hospital," Jake said.

He would then find out that Beigel not only died in the attack but did so a hero. He shielded students from gunfire and tried to get them back into a classroom.

"That was his first year at the school. Being there, not even knowing part of the school, just saving those kids was just a heroic act," Jake said.

Which is exactly why the Zaretsky family--led by siblings Jake and Mia --will spend this weekend raising money in Scott Beigel's memory.

They will host a 3-mile run or walk to raise funds for underprivileged children to experience the same Camp Starlight magic that they've had. They can't help but think their hero will be smiling down during camp this summer.

"Scott we all like miss you. We wish you the best of luck in heaven," Mia said.
