Viral post rallies community to rescue trapped dog

A family said they're grateful for the dozens of volunteers and people willing to help from across Georgia and the world after a Facebook post about their trapped dog Handsome went viral and spurred rescue efforts.

"Before I knew it, people were calling, asking what they could bring... from everywhere, from all over the world," Monica Carpenter said.

After her husband Nathaniel Carpenter and Handsome spent the evening of January 1 hunting in the woods, his furry companion became trapped in between giant boulders and no one could get him out; firefighters also tried, but to no avail.

"It literally devastated me... I wasn't giving up on him," Monica said.

"He's like a kid to me. He was my best friend," Nathaniel said.

Monica's Facebook post garnered thousands of shares, and users from as far as Ontario contacted FOX 5 as to how they could help.

"Once I realized he couldn't get out... I started digging. A lot of people were helping me," Nathaniel said.

Dozens of crews arrived with shovels and tools to aid the effort.

A climber volunteered to crawl into the space and help get Handsome out, but ended up spending hours accompanying the dog until he breathed his last breath.

"We couldn't thank y'all enough. To some people, it's a dog, but to us, it's our family," Monica said.
