Water main break closes roads in Fishtown, 12 customers without service

Expect road closures for Tuesday morning's rush hour and likely throughout the day, according to the Philadelphia Water Department.

It says an eight inch water main broke at about 12:30 a.m. at Frankford and Thompson streets, leaving 12 customers without water a number of street closures.

They are Frankford Avenue from Girard to Thompson; Shackamaxon from Girard to Thompson; and Thompson from Leopard to Frankford.

Also, SEPTA's Route 5 and 25 buses are being detoured. Click here for SEPTA's System Status.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley reports a police officer told him he noticed the was road bumpier than usual and he was first to report the situation.

Keeley also says SEPTA usually puts detour routes up but in this case, police have had to direct buses. In fact, one bus had to make a U-turn because busy Frankford Avenue is shut down.

At least two properties have water damage.

Water is still bubbling up underground.

Water department crews will resume work after 9 a.m., but water service isn't expected to be back until the afternoon.
