Woman dies after being found unconscious, injured in North Philly

Philadelphia Police are investigating the discovery of an unidentified woman found lying in the street, badly injured. The woman was pronounced dead around 8:30 Tuesday morning.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley reports another woman found the victim in an isolated area on the street in North Philadelphia, late Monday.

That woman flagged down Philadelphia Housing police officers just before 11:30 p.m. in the 2700 block of N. 3rd Street, near Lehigh Avenue.

The unidentified victim was unresponsive. She had been suffering from severe head trauma and had several other injuries to her body. She was rushed to the hospital for surgery, but later succumbed to her injuries.

Authorities believed the injury to the woman's head may have been a gunshot wound, but are still waiting to confirm the cause of the injury.

There was a small amount of blood found at the crime scene and also a boot, but no weapon.

It's not known whether the woman was attacked there or somewhere else, and simply dumped.

Police say they think she's in her 40s.

There have been no missing person reports about anybody matching her description, so no loved ones have been able to go to her side.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
