6-year-old paralyzed from the chest down has one Christmas wish

CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46)- A 6-year-old girl recently paralyzed from a tragic car accident has one Christmas wish this year.

Kai Gonzales and her mother were in a serious car accident in April. She suffered a broken neck with a spinal cord and brain injury. It left her paralyzed from the chest down, although, initially, she had to be hooked up to a life support ventilator and her family was told Kai would not be able to move from the neck down and would not be able to talk or swallow.

Kai was released from the hospital in late July 2015 with 24 hour nursing care that stopped in September. She now attends three-hour days at school, but is in a wheelchair, making it difficult to get around.

Shelby King, a single mother, had to quit her job to take care of her only child.

King was able to purchase a few presents for Kai this Christmas, but there's one gift she really cannot afford -- a wheelchair accessible conversion van.

She started a GoFundMe page, hoping people will donate. Right now, Kai isn't able to leave the house unless a special needs bus comes to pick her up. This happens for school and when the family goes to physical therapy. Kai says she would love to go to movies, the park and get sushi at her favorite restaurant.
