A Step Closer For Sidewalks Along New Falls Road In Levittown

Levittown, PA (WTXF) - A local mother who suffered a painful loss has reason to celebrate Tuesday night.

After losing her son, the Bucks County woman began fighting for changes that could save lives. She finally claimed a victory, but as FOX 29's Shawnette Wilson reports. She has one more hurdle to clear.

"I couldn't have done any of it without the help my friends and community support," said Sharon Rearick. She broke down in tears after an emotional victory.

"All those in favor? All opposed? 5-0," voted the Middletown Township Board of Supervisors. They voted in favor of sidewalks being installed along New Falls Road in Levittown and they agreed to help maintain them.

"I'm just ecstatic. I mean we worked so hard," said Rearick.

Her mission to get sidewalks installed began four years ago when her 23-year old son John was hit and killed by a driver that kept going. She believes he stepped out into the road to get around an overgrown tree when he was hit. A memorial remains at the site.

"This is big. John is looking down on us saying we did it," said Patty Nichols, Vice President of SAFE: Sidewalks Are For Everyone.

PennDot has agreed to pay $1.7 million to install the sidewalks but several townships surrounding the stretch have to agree to maintain them before they can be put in. Sharon, surrounded by supporters, is remaining hopeful.

"One more township to go. We're saving lives. One more township to go and a lot more sidewalks to put in," said Rearick and Nichols.

The project still needs a commitment from Bristol Township to help maintain the sidewalks before it can move forward. They could vote this Thursday.
