Officer shot in Atlantic City remains in ICU, 2nd officer released from hospital

An Atlantic City police officer remains in serious condition after he and another officer were injured during a shooting Tuesday afternoon that left a suspect dead.

What we know:

Investigators say the incident unfolded on the 100 block of North Florida Avenue at around 3 p.m.

Authorities were executing a warrant on the block when officials say two Atlantic City police officers were shot. 

One of the officers suffered life-threatening injuries, while the other wounded officer was placed in stable condition.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting, according to investigators. 

The Policemen's Benevolent Association Local No. 24 identified the seriously injured officer as Sergeant Ivanov on Wednesday. He remains in the Intensive Care Unit and "still has a long road to recovery ahead of him."

The second officer, who was not identified by the PBA, has been released from the hospital. 

"This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers police officers face every time they put on the uniform and walk out the door to serve and protect their communities," a PBA statement read.

Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small, Sr. issued the following statement:

"The fine men and women in blue of the Atlantic City Police Department put their lives on the line every day to protect our community, and I am grateful for their courage. We truly have the best police department in the world. My thoughts and prayers are with the two Atlantic City police officers who were wounded this afternoon, as well as their families, and the entire Atlantic City Police Department during this difficult time. We are hopeful for their full and speedy recovery. Any additional information regarding this incident will be released by the Atlantic City Police Department or the New Jersey Office of Attorney General."

Details surrounding the shooting are still developing. The identity of the deceased suspect is unknown at this time.

The Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is investigating the fatal police-involved shooting.
