Delaware governor signs law raising age to buy tobacco products

Delaware Governor John Carney signed into law Wednesday legislation that raises from 18 to 21 the age at which people can legally purchase tobacco products, e-cigarettes and vaping gear. The measure takes effect in 90 days.

11 states--including New Jersey--and countless municipalities, including New York City have already raised the legal age to buy tobacco products.

Tobacco is considered the leading cause of preventable death in Delaware claiming 1,400 lives per year. The vast majority of adults who use tobacco took up the habit as teens.
