Philadelphia police say a woman was driving under the influence when she crashed her vehicle, killing the man riding with her at the time.

The deadly crash happened on the 6600 block of Frankford Avenue just before 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Police say the 28-year-old driver was speeding when she crashed into an empty, parked work van, pushing it onto the sidewalk.

Paramedics arrived to find her 35-year-old passenger lying in the middle of the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The passenger side was actually completely torn open, so it appears that the victim was ejected from the passenger side of the vehicle," said Chief Police Inspector Scott Small.

The woman remained on the scene and was taken to the hospital with minor injuries before police say she was arrested for DUI.
