The backstory:
The Eagles are coming off an exciting win in the snow over the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round. Despite sloppy conditions and a few injuries to key players, the team was able to use their dominant run game to the tune of 285 yards rushing.
Saquon Barkley was able to account for 205 of those yards, including two long touchdown runs. Hurts was able to break off a 44-yard touchdown run of his own early in the game.
While the Eagles were outgained in total yards in that game, the defense came up big when it mattered most, stifling a surging Rams passing attack late in the game. The defense was also able to force two key turnovers and rack up a total of five sacks.
The defense was without linebacker Nakobe Dean, who suffered a season-ending injury in the Wild Card win over the Green Bay Packers. Rookie corner Quinyon Mitchell also missed most of the game with a shoulder injury, but has been cleared to play Sunday.
The Eagles passing attack continued leaving fans wanting more as Hurts finished with just 128 yards through the air and no touchdowns. Dallas Goedert, who will play Sunday after missing some practice time with an ankle injury, was the leading receiver against the rams with 56 yards on four catches. Meanwhile, AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith combined for just six receptions and 35 total yards.
Eagles vs. Commanders Game Notes
Key Matchups:
With the Eagles passing game still seemingly a question mark, Washington's defense will have to try their bet to stop running back. Saquon Barkley.
The Commanders were 30th in the regular season defending the run, allowing an average of 137.5 yards per game. That doesn’t bode well for stopping Barkley.
In the regular season, Barkley became the ninth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000-plus yards, helping the Eagles average 179.3 yards on the ground, good for second in the league. And he has continued rolling in the playoffs, breaking Steve van Buren’s franchise record for rushing yards in a playoff game by running all over the Rams.
The second of Barkley’s two rushing TDs against Los Angeles, a 78-yard scamper through the snow, instantly became one of the highlights of the season and one of the best plays in recent Eagles history.
Meanwhile, the Eagles will have to focus on Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels.
The rookie quarterback lit up the Eagles defense in the previous matchup in late December, accounting for 339 yards between nine carries and 24 completions.
The No. 2 overall pick out of LSU passed for 299 yards and two TDs and ran for 51 yards in the win at Detroit on Saturday night.
