FBI warns of possible pre-Election Day terror attacks

U.S. intelligence officials tell CBS News that Al-Qaeda could be planning attacks in New York, Texas, and Virginia next week.

The report does not specify locations, but does suggest sources are pointing to a possible attack ahead of Election Day.

Joint terrorism task forces across the country have been alerted by the FBI out of an abundance of caution as they further investigate.

The report has not been independently verified by FOX.

"The counterterrorism and homeland security communities remain vigilant and well-postured to defend against attacks here in the United States," a senior FBI official told CBS News.

"The FBI, working with our federal, state and local counterparts, shares and assesses intelligence on a daily basis and will continue to work closely with law enforcement and intelligence community partners to identify and disrupt any potential threat to public safety," the official said.

Intelligence about possible threats always spikes ahead of major events.
