Fetus found in Texas High School restroom

SOUTH HOUSTON, Texas (FOX 26) - The tragic discovery was made Wednesday night at South Houston High School in Pasadena.

Officials with the Pasadena Independent School District say they don't know the gestational age of the fetus and say they don't know if the fetus was alive at the time of birth.

It was a janitor school officials say who found the fetus around 9 o'clock Wednesday night. A district spokesperson says the do know the identity of the mother. That's apparently due to surveillance video which captured her leaving the restroom shortly before the discovery was made.

"Our police department notified the mother's family because the mother is a juvenile at her home during the night between midnight and 2 a.m.," said district spokesperson Renea Ivy-Sims. "Certainly the school district will be available to her and offer her assistance that she needs from our prospective but those decisions haven't been made yet she's still receiving medical attention today and that's our primary concern for her to be physically ok then we'll be able to work with her as she returns to school to determine what she might need at that time."

An autopsy will be performed to determine if the baby was alive at the time of the birth.

The district's police department is continuing to investigate but it's not known if the juvenile mother will face any type of criminal charges.

The district urges students who are dealing with any kind of medical or emotional problems to seek out school counselors.
