I-495 in Delaware reopened after multi-vehicle crash

All lanes on I-495 in Delaware have reopened after a multi-vehicle crash.

It happened shortly before 4 p.m. Monday at the southbound split in New Castle.

Police say a Ford truck, which was towing a trailer was traveling southbound I-495 in the center lane. According to police, as the truck slowed down because of traffic it was rear-ended by a Freightliner tractor-trailer, which forced the truck into the left lane where it struck a Dodge truck. The Ford truck overturned with the trailer.

As a result of the Ford truck and trailer overturning approximately 30 gallons of hydraulic fluid and 10 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the roadway. DNREC responded to the scene and conducted a clean-up operation.

According to police, a passenger in the Ford truck suffered minor injuries.

Police say the operator of the tractor-trailer was issued a traffic citation for following too close.

SkyFOX flew over the scene, which showed a backup for miles. The road was closed for three hours.
