Man in custody after knifepoint robbery, struggle with officer

Philadelphia police have taken a man into custody following a knifepoint robbery at a North Philadelphia Rite Aid.

Police say a Rite Aid on the 2100 block of North Broad Street was robbed around 1:15 a.m. Friday morning, with a suspect holding an employee at knifepoint.

Approximately 45 minutes later an officer caught up with a man fitting the description of the robbery suspect at 12th and Huntingdon streets. When an officer attempted to stop him, police say he took off on foot again.

The officer eventually caught up with the suspect on the 2500 block of 12th Street and a violent struggle ensued, and the suspect was able to flee again. In the struggle, police say the officer lost some equipment from his belt and sustained minor injuries requiring stitches.

Police again caught up with the suspect a few blocks away and he was finally taken into custody.
