Man Miraculously Wakes Up From 48 Day Coma and Immediately Says, 'I Want Taco Bell'

(INSIDE EDITION) After cheating death, live más.

That appeared to be the mindset of Florida man Jake Booth, who awoke from a 48-day coma and immediately asked his relieved family members for some Taco Bell.

Booth's brother, Jason Schwartz, told InsideEdition.com that the entire journey began in February, when he was hospitalized following a complication with pneumonia.

After his heart stopped for 15 minutes, Booth was put in a medically induced coma, but family members were concerned when the Fort Myers man didn't wake up, even after they eased him from the medication.

"They said unplug him, stop feeding him, stop watering him," Schwartz said. "[His wife] never gave up. She said, 'Absolutely not.'"

Finally, 48 days later, Booth began opening his eyes.

The next shock to the family was when his first words were, "I want Taco Bell."

"I didn't even know that he liked Taco Bell," Schwartz, 42, told InsideEdition.com. "Turns out, that was the only thing he wanted."

Because he had feeding tubes in his throat, and had not swallowed in months, doctors and nurses were hesitant to give him water, let alone tacos.

So they worked up to the challenge. Schwartz said they started with apple sauce and custard, while monitoring his swallowing and digestion throughout.

About three weeks later, after Schwartz said he strongly suggested to the nurse that his younger brother passed his swallow test, Booth was awarded his prize for all the hard work.

"It's taco time," Schwartz said on the big day.

His friends gathered around, and watched the man valiantly devour eight and a half tacos in one sitting.

"I tried to see how many I could eat once, and I ate six before I was like 'You've had enough tacos, dude,'" he laughed to InsideEdition.com.

But, after having lost almost 100 pounds since the entire ordeal began, Schwartz joked and said his brother was probably hungry.

Impressed by the dedication, Taco Bell even sent sweatshirts and gift cards to the family after Schwartz told them about his brother's goals.

Since then, the 36-year-old has been asking for other hearty meals, including a meatball sub, a cheeseburger, and an Arby's Beef 'n Cheddar Classic, most of which they have gotten for him.

But Schwartz, who lives in Phoenix, said his brother's journey with eating fast food since waking up from his coma is only reflective of his journey in healing.

Although Schwartz said the entire family were extremely proud of the progress he has made so far, he still has a long way to go.

He remains in physical and occupational therapy daily, and undergoes dialysis treatment three times a week, but Schwartz said that the last few months is only the beginning of the veteran's journey to recovery, despite the return of his appetite.

To help offset the family's medical bills, Schwartz has set up a GoFundMe page with the goal equivalent to Booth's annual salary, to give the former police officer a full year to focus on recovery.

Schwartz has even reached out to Taco Bell, hoping for a donation in return for all the free publicity. He has not yet heard back.
