Officials: Suspect fatally shoots self after exchanging gunfire with police in Summerdale

SUMMERDALE (FOX 29) - Police are sorting details after officers exchanged gunfire with a suspect in a domestic dispute. It all ended when police say the man shot himself in the middle of Roosevelt Boulevard.

A quiet spring night erupted into gunfire on the 5600 block of Miriam Road in northeast Philadelphia.

"We were sitting around. We first heard one gunshot and this it was kind of quiet and all of a sudden we heard six more after that," said Anss Khattab.

Police involved in the shooting with the suspect say they were initially called to a domestic incident. They say when they arrived they encountered a man with a gun who allegedly fired a number of shots at them. That is the commotion the neighbors heard.

Police say the two officers chased the suspect who ran south on Miriam, turned on Bridge Street and ran into the grass median on Roosevelt Boulevard.

That's where, police say, the suspect shot himself. Police and crime scene investigators at both locations trying to piece together the events that unfolded. Members of the man's family on the scene, as well.

"We've been here five years and this kind of stuff hasn't happened. But, I guess that's what happens nowadays. It's sad," Khattab added.

Police sources say the man had recently been arrested on weapons possession charges.

The investigation is ongoing.
