Police: Shots fired during road rage incident in Kensington

KENSINGTON (WTXF) - Police have arrested a man after they say he opened fire during a road rage incident in Kensington.

"Sounded like a bomb." That's how witnesses described the metal crunching crash between two city police SUVs at D and Indiana as officers responded to a shooting Friday morning. The crash was so violent it shook the surveillance cameras that captured it on video from a local store.

"Next thing I know they collide. It looked like 'Fast and the Furious' out here,' eyewitness John Baytani told FOX 29

"I heard a big crash and then I jumped out of my bed," 11-year-old Crislees Vega said as she stood next to her aunt.

The two 24th District SUVs collided just after 10 a.m. sending one vehicle crashing into a utility pole and then into a house. Air bags deployed on both SUVs as injured officers scrambled to get out.

"The one officer jumped out, jumped from the back of the car. His face was filled with blood," Baytani said.

"Two police officers were coming out of that car and there was blood all over their face," Vega said.

Police say it all started after an argument between two drivers at Kensington and Allegheny. One driver got out and fired four shots at the other driver. As SEPTA police started to chase the shooting suspect, Philadelphia police responded, leading to the crash.

The suspect's red Honda then crashed at C and Allegheny. He was busted by SEPTA police.

Meanwhile, accident investigators converged on the scene at D and Indiana as tow trucks removed both heavily damaged police vehicles, snapping this pole in half as they pulled the one SUV from the damaged home.

East Division Captain Nick Brown says tonight the shooting was captured on real time Crime Center cameras. Police are searching the suspect's vehicle for a gun. Those four officers remain here at Temple Hospital.
