Police: Student stabbed multiple times inside Upper Darby High School

A student was rushed to the hospital after police say he was stabbed multiple times inside Upper Darby High School on Monday morning.

It was just before noon Monday when police say they raced to Upper Darby High School after a freshman was approached in a stairwell by another student and stabbed repeatedly.

"Stabbed at least one time in the back--bleeding pretty heavy--got cuts on his ear, head, forearm, hand," Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood told FOX 29 Monday night.

Investigators say surveillance cameras captured a 14-year-old freshman enter the stairwell just before the stabbing and look out several times--almost searching for someone. When the 15-year-old victim entered, the 14-year-old exited quickly, according to police.

"The victim's lucky to be alive cause I saw the trail of blood," Superintendent Chitwood explained.

"It's scary. I didn't think it was gonna happen in our school," senior Drian Lamy told FOX 29.

Superintendent Chitwood says police used the video to help ID the 14-year-old. He was taken into custody. His home was searched for the knife, but no knife was found. He faces juvenile charges, including aggravated assault.

"It looks like the stabbing was over a girl--pure and simple," the superintendent said.

"I don't want to see nothing too drastic like metal detectors," Lamy added.

Lamy is a senior at Upper Darby High. He was upset about the stabbing and wondering how the student got the knife into the 4,000 student school in the first place.

"That's what I'm really trying to wonder--really trying to ask--like how did that happen?" Lamy asked.

"Kids open the door, they don't come back, they come in the side, they come in the front. Who knows," Superintendent Chitwood said.

Police have not recovered the knife.

Below is a statement released by the district superintendent following the incident:
