Students head back to school in Philadelphia

Summer break is officially over for Philadelphia public school students.

Monday is the first day of school, and students are gearing up for several festivities across the city.

Classes are starting for students and teachers before Labor Day for the first time in the Philadelphia school district.

From 6 a.m. through 11 a.m., Muslims4Humanity will be hosting a community giveaway event at Bryant Elementary in Cobbs Creek. The first-of-its-kind event will provide free backpacks, uniforms, haircuts and school supplies, as well as community resources and employment opportunities for parents.

At 8 a.m., Mayor Jim Kenney is slated to speak at Munoz-Marin Elementary School in Old City as part of its ceremonial bell-ringing for the first day of school.
