Teen dies after Easter Sunday shooting on South Street; suspect sought

A 16-year-old boy has died after he was shot on a popular Philadelphia street on Easter Sunday.

Officers responded to a report of gunshots on the 800 block of South Street where they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to his left pelvis.

The victim, who has since been identified as William Bethel, was taken to the hospital in critical, but stable condition. Bethel succumbed to his injuries late Tuesday night.

Bethel, a Boys' Latin Charter School student, was on the honor roll, played football, basketball, and participated in boxing. The school has been out on spring break but released a statement saying in part:

"Bill was loved and respected by his peers and teachers. He was full of kindness and has a magnetic spirit. He was a leader with a warm heart and gentle smile...he is remembered by his Boys' Latin family for his strong character and courage."

The investigation is ongoing with the Homicide Unit. Police say they have no description of the gunman at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
