Toddler shot and killed in Bucks County identified

Authorities in Bucks County have identified a toddler who was shot and killed at a home in Bucks County Monday morning.

State police and Bucks County detectives are working, collecting evidence trying to determine if the shooting is accidental.

Police say 2-year-old Benjamin Austin Smith was shot in the chest on the 2100 block of Kumry Road around 11:05 a.m. in Milford Township, and later succumbed to his injuries.

Police say the toddler was home only with his father, Nicholas Wyllie, late Monday morning when the gun went off. It's believed the child's mother lived there and worked just across the street but abruptly moved out earlier this summer. Also living there is the boy's grandparents who arrived home to get the tragic news.

Neighbors tell FOX 29 they weren't even aware a 2-year-old lived there.

There's more questions than answers tonight. But as police continue to search for clues, their hearts are heavy, no matter the circumstances.

The investigation is ongoing. A briefing is expected to be held tomorrow morning.
