Washington D.C. news anchors swing at Bryce Harper piñata ahead of his return to Nationals Park
WASHINGTON D.C. (FOX 29) - Our sister station in Washington D.C. spent part of their morning "swinging for the fences," in what may be a preview of how Washington Nationals fans will welcome back Bryce Harper Tuesday night.
Members of the Good Day DC team at FOX 5 hung a baseball-shaped piñata in their studio with a photo of Bryce Harper, in a Phillies uniform, attached to it.
Then, anchor Wisdom Martin and weather anchor Tucker Barnes, took turns hitting the piñata with a broomstick, and even their fists.
Martin shared some behind the scenes footage of himself and Barnes "teeing off" on Twitter.
Eventually, Martin is able to break open the piñata and shares the candy inside with his co-anchors.
There has been something of a parlor game in both the nation's capital and Philadelphia lately, trying to guess how Harper will be greeted upon his return.
He did, after all, win 2012 NL Rookie of the Year and 2015 NL MVP honors with Washington. He helped the club make four playoff appearances. He thrilled spectators by winning last year's All-Star Home Run Derby in his home ballpark.
The slugger shared his own feelings for the city in an Instagram post-Tuesday morning, thanking the Nationals and their fans.
Harper said he expects "some cheers, some boos, as well."
Thousands of Phillies fans are expected to make the trek down I-95.
