West Nile virus found in nearly 20 towns in Delaware County
DELAWARE COUNTY (WTXF) - All of the standing water means a bumper crop of mosquitoes. Officials have found mosquitoes that have tested positive for West Nile virus in nearly 20 towns in Delaware County. As of now, no human cases have been reported in Delco.
"I absolutely hate mosquitos so I'm out here if there's anything to dump," Kim Marryott said.
It's been on and off raining with humid heat for days now.
So Kim Marryott like just about everybody else is struggling to keep a check on standing water.
"Dump it, clean it every day, yeah."
Great advice considering Kim lives in Springfield, Delaware County, which is one of about 20 townships that Delco health officials report mosquitos tested positive for carrying the West Nile virus this summer.
West Nile Virus can be very serious for people with compromised immune systems, the elderly and the very young. However, for the vast majority of people it's not a big worry. The majority exposed to the virus don't even realize it.
