Blizzard Damages Birds Exhibit at Elmwood Park Zoo

The Birds of Paradise exhibit at Norristown's Elmwood Park Zoo suffered extensive damage from the weekend's storm, the zoo said.

Snow from the blizzard collapsed the exhibit's steel mesh roof, although the birds themselves were in a separate building and were unharmed. Crews Monday assessed the damage and cleared debris.

"It's funny to say 'we were lucky' in a time like this, but it was lucky that Birds of Paradise was closed for the winter," Al Zone, Executive Director and CEO of Elmwood Park Zoo, said in a statement. "Exhibits can be rebuilt. It's more important that the animals are safe."

The zoo will be closed to the public until further notice.
