Body discovered believed to be missing 4-year-old

SCOTLAND COUNTY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - The FBI has confirmed to Fox 46 Charlotte that a body found in a pond off of Peabridge Rd. in Scotland County Saturday afternoon is believed to be missing 4-year-old Raul Gonzalez Johnson.

"This is the outcome everybody feared. It is heartbreaking," said Scotland County Sheriff Ralph Kersey.

Investigators say the body was found in a pond near where the child was last seen. He wandered away from his home where he was being watched by his grandfather.

"At this time it appears to be accidental," said Sheriff Kersey. "We will continue the investigation until we find out what happened to this little boy."

The body has been sent to the Scotland County Medical Examiners Office to confirm identity and cause of death. Authorities do believe his death is accidental. The FBI's Evidence Response Team is on scene collecting evidence.
