Child Struck by Bus in Salem

A nine-year-old girl was struck by a home health transport bus Wednesday in Salem, N.J.. The child is conscious and alert, police said.

According to Salem's chief of police, the accident took place on Walnut Street, near Sinnickson Street. "The bus driver observed a girl running out into the roadway," according to an email from the chief. "The driver attempted to swerve to avoid the child but we believe the mirror on the bus struck the child on the forehead. The driver pulled to the side of the road and called 9-1-1 as did several bystanders.

The girl, with a visible laceration on her forehead, was taken to Christiana Hospital.

No charges are pending at this time.
