Curry powder recalled due to high lead levels

A New York-based company is recalling several brands of curry powder because of elevated levels of lead, according to the FDA.

Sirob Imports Inc. of Lindenhurst is recalling the spice sold under the brand names Corrado, Orlando Imports, Nouri's Syrian Bakery, Mediterranean Specialty Foods Brand, and Butera Fruit Market and distributed in New York, New Jersey, and Illinois.

Every day, people are exposed to lead, which is toxic, from inhaling dust, eating food, or drinking water, the FDA said. In general, exposure in small amounts doesn't pose a health concern.

"However, exposure to larger amounts of lead can cause lead poisoning," the FDA said. "Symptoms can include abdominal pain, vomiting, lethargy, irritability, weakness, behavior or mood changes, delirium, seizures, and coma."

The curry powder is packaged in 8-ounce and 16-ounce plastic containers with these labels and UPCs:
