David Creato sentenced to 10 years in son's killing

A Camden County father who confessed to killing his 3-year-old son faced sentencing Friday.

David Creato was sentenced at 10 years behind bars in the death of his son, Brendan after he pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter.

The 23-year-old pleaded guilty to killing his son back on August 23, just months after a jury failed to reach a decision in court.

3-year-old Brendan Creato was found about a mile from his father's home in October 2015, hours after his father had told police the boy had wandered away from his home.

Prosecutors argued in court that David 'DJ' Creato killed his son because he'd supposedly become an impediment to his dad's relationship with a teenage girlfriend.

During his trial, Creato had maintained his son wandered away from his Haddon Township home in October 2015.

Then in August, Creato stated under oath that he recklessly caused his son's death under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life by depriving Brendan of oxygen on October 13, 2015.

The plea came as prosecutors prepared to retry Creato on first-degree murder charges.

Creato will have to serve at least eight and a half years before he is eligible for parole.
