Delaware State trooper killed boyfriend who was beating her

PINE CREEK, Del. (WTXF) - A late night shooting in Wilmington involved an off-duty Delaware State trooper and her boyfriend, and now, the boyfriend is dead.

Delaware State Police say the preliminary investigation shows someone inside called 911 after the boyfriend -- Maurice Ifill, 43 -- started severely beating the trooper at about 11pm Sunday. It happened in her home in the 3200 block of Champions Drive. She was able to get her service weapon and fire a shot, hitting him in his chest.

Then, authorities say troopers learned the trooper - an eight-year state police vet - and her boyfriend of "Owings Mills, Md., had been involved in a violent physical altercation inside of the home. At some point during the altercation, the trooper was able to retrieve her service handgun. She then fired the weapon, striking Ifill in the upper torso."

Authorities had said they arrived to find her "severely battered."

The trooper and Ifill were taken to the hospital. Ifill was declared dead and "the trooper was admitted to the hospital with serious injuries and is currently in stable condition."

Outside, the trooper's work vehicle had been backed in to her driveway. His Lexus from Maryland was towed away.

Neighbors told FOX 29's Steve Keeley the trooper is a great person, in her 40s, with two high school-age kids who were not believed to be home.
