Hero Camden officer fighting for his life after being struck by fleeing cab driver

A New Jersey police officer who helped save the life of four men during a fiery crash is now fighting for his life.

Last week, Officer Joseph Mair was recognized for his heroic act. Now, Mair is in the hospital after getting run over while responding to a different crash.

Mair was struck by a cab driver just before 11 p.m. on Thursday night at Mount Emphraim Avenue and Thurman Street.

Police say that when Mair stepped out of his cruiser, the cab driver attempted to flee and hit him. The cab wound up careening into an abandoned home.

Good Samaritans came out of their homes and rendered aid to Mair while waiting for emergency services to arrive.

Mair was then rushed to Cooper University Hospital with extensive injuries to his hips and legs.

Neighbors say the cab driver stayed on scene. He was later arrested.
