Inferno destroys landmark Marcal paper mill

A fire continued to burn Thursday at the Marcal paper mill in New Jersey hours after an inferno broke out amid frigid temperatures.

The eight-alarm blaze erupted at about 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Elmwood Park facility along the Passaic River. The wind whipped up the flames for hours and sent glowing embers into the sky, prompting officials to evacuate several homes near the facility as a precaution.

Several buildings at the mill collapsed. The iconic red 'MARCAL' sign was also destroyed.

Smoke from the huge fire traveled east across Manhattan and farther. Fox 5 Sky Guardian weather radar captured an image of the smoke plume.

No injuries were reported and it was not clear what sparked the fire.
