Late night shootings, 1 deadly, considered drug-related

A late-night double shooting, two blocks apart, ended with one person dead and a second wounded, and police suspect the violence was drug-related.

The shootings happened just after 11pm Wednesday on the 500 block of E. Cheltenham Avenue, near Rising Sun Avenue.

Neighbors heard shooting and called police, who found a 20-year-old man in the 500 block of Alcott Street shot in his back or groin.

He was taken to the hospital but police say he told investigators he and his friend were walking on the 500 block of Cheltenham Avenue when an unknown man at the intersection of Colgate Street began firing at them.

He ran east on Cheltenham, then north on Bingham Street, then west on Alcott Street. Unfortunately, that's when the gunman caught up to him, shot him, and got away.

Then, officers surveyed two blocks away, near 500 E. Cheltenham, where they found an unidentified man lying on the sidewalk and pronounced dead soonafter.

Plus, they found cash, drugs and bullet casings on the ground.

Police are trying to identify the victim who was killed, since he was not carrying identification.

They're also looking at private surveillance video that may have captured the shooting.

The motive is unknown and there is no arrest.
