Local families get keys to newly refurbished cars

NEW JERSEY (WTXF) - Three local families got the keys to newly refurbished cars that will make a world of difference.

It was pure joy for Robert Gardner of Bordentown, New Jersey.

"When I seen this car I couldn't believe that that's mine," he told FOX 29.

The Vietnam-era veteran who says he recently suffered a stroke now has the first car of his own in five years.

"I can't get to the store. I can't make my doctor's appointments. I'm trapped like a rat and this means the world to me."

"So much going through my mind. Excited. This is emotional. True blessing honestly. "

Janira Duran, of Kennett Square, also learned she'd be getting her own wheels, which is a big help for a single mom of a 3-year-old girl.

"It's going to take me everywhere now. Hopefully, now back to school also. Get a better education for me and a chance to give a better future for my daughter," she said.

The cars were donated as part of the National Auto Body Council's Recycled Rides program.

The program helps people in need with refurbished vehicles, including Randy Schlitter.

The Warminster father of two boys and Marine veteran who says he served two tours in Iraq now works in the auto industry, but was unable to get his own transportation until now.

"Having this vehicle is really a great relief off our shoulders to have another vehicle so everybody can get to work and be on time."
