New Jersey officer 'jumped into action' after finding townhome on fire: police
PHILADELPHIA - A New Jersey police officer is being praised for his quick-thinking that helped residents safely escape a house fire that torched a townhome two days after Christmas.
The Gloucester Township Police Department said Officer Shawn Kelly stumbled upon the house fire while patrolling in the Cherrywood Townhome community early Friday morning.
Kelly "jumped into action" and called for help while ensuring that all residents escaped the inferno safely, police said. One resident was treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation.
Crews from eight nearby fire departments helped "quickly extinguish" the fire. It's unknown at this time what sparked the blaze.
Firefighters are reminding the public to make sure all smoke detectors are working to reduce the threat of a house fire.
