Phila. Police release more information about officer-involved shooting in SW Philadelphia

SOUTHWEST PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - Philadelphia Police have released more information regarding a police-involved shooting that occurred earlier this week.

According to police, on Tuesday at 11:14 p.m. uniformed, on-duty officers from the 12 th District in a marked vehicle heard gunshots which they believe came from the rear alleyway between the 5300 block of Lindbergh Boulevard and the 5300 block of Grays Avenue.

The officers entered the alley and saw 50-year-old Desmond Abernathy standing on the rear deck of 5300 Grays Avenue, holding a gun.

Officers ordered Abernathy to drop the weapon, however, police say he ignored the officers' commands and fired once at them.

According to police, 8-year force veteran Edward Wright fired his service weapon, striking Abernathy in the right thigh.

Abernathy then ran into the rear of the home.

The officers entered the home and found the man lying on the kitchen floor. They also saw another male, later identified as 47-year-old Curt Joseph, flee the property through the front door.

He was later taken into custody by police and a weapon was recovered.

Abernathy was taken to Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition. He was charged with attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault, violation of uniform firearms act, and related offenses.

Joseph was charged with hindering apprehension, violation of the uniform firearms act, tampering with evidence, obstructing justice, and related offenses.
