Police investigate Overbrook shooting
OVERBROOK (WTXF) - "Me personally? I think it's getting worse."
Alonda Tally says it's getting scary out there for LGBTQ people.
"Before it wasn't like this. But now people are just coming up and getting killed just specifically for like who they are and what they are."
Police have clarified early word that a transgender person was involved in last night's shooting at 66th and Malvern, right across from Jeong Ho and Inja Lee's corner store. The Lees caught some of the attack on a store security camera. Shadowy figures can be seen struggling, then running.
Police say the victim was hit in the hip and taken to Lankenau Hospital. No arrests have been made. Deja Alvarez of the LGBTQ Home for Hope says society is recognizing more attacks on LGBTQ people.
"Now that it's being reported correctly more times than not, people are taking more notice to the amount of violence and the amount of hate that transgender people face on a daily basis."
Police have told us tonight that the victim is not, in fact, transgender. They've ruled out the shooting as a hate crime, saying that robbery was likely the motive. The incident began at a bar at 66th and Landsdowne, say police, and surveillance video reveals suspects known to police, though again, no arrests have been made.
