According to our partners at FOX 2 Detroit, Canton police said officers had been dispatched to a daycare on Monday morning after receiving a report of a toddler that had been found in possession of a loaded firearm. The weapon has since been secured and an investigation is underway.

The Canton Police Department reported that its officers responded to the Children’s World Early Learning Center after receiving a report that a toddler had been found in possession of a loaded firearm. The weapon has since been secured and an investigation is now underway.

The police department told Detroit’s FOX 2 that investigators have obtained video of the toddler taking out the firearm while at the daycare, noting that the weapon was still in its holster. It is still not clear how the child got the gun.
Officer taken into custody
One of the toddler’s parents was reported to have been taken into custody following the incident. FOX 2 is reporting that the firearm’s owner is a police officer from a neighboring department. The child’s other parent is also being investigated.

After the incident, the daycare released a statement saying that its staff took pride in being one of the safest centers in and around Canton, which sits about 30 miles west of Detroit.
"Although this incident was out of our control, we are very proud of our staff and especially the teacher who responded so quickly," the center wrote. "It was an unfortunate incident. No one was hurt and all safety measures were followed. Because of our attention to safety and our strict adherence to protocols, we avoided what could have been a tragedy."
Canton’s police chief also recognized the daycare staff for doing the right thing after tracking down the firearm.
