Pope condemns 'vile' attack on Syrians in Easter address

On Christianity's most joyful day, Pope Francis lamented the horrors generated by war and hatred, delivering an Easter Sunday message that also decried the "latest vile" attack on civilians in Syria.

Christian faithfuls also gathered in Jerusalem's Old City to celebrate Easter Sunday.

People crammed into the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the site where Jesus is said to have been crucified and resurrected.

The Catholic mass was led by the Latin Patriarch, Archbishop Pizzaballa, one of the most senior church officials in Israel.

The service was attended by scores of people from a variety of countries.

Plus, a service was held in Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity, the place where Christian tradition says Jesus was born.

This year, Easter is celebrated on the same day by both Catholic and Eastern Orthodox worshippers.
